It is easy to believe that all traumatic brain injuries are the same, but this is not true. While all of these are serious, there are many different types.
These injuries are categorized as either open or closed. Regardless of the type or extent, a traumatic brain injury is caused by an external force, such as trauma during a motor vehicle accident.
A concussion is the most common type of traumatic brain injury. This is caused by direct impact to the head, such as by whiplash, being hit by debris, or another similar circumstance.
Another type of traumatic brain injury is a contusion. Caused in the same manner as a concussion, this is known as bleeding in the brain. The complicated part of a contusion is that surgery is often required
A diffuse axonal injury is extremely dangerous, as this can lead to coma, permanent damage, and even death. This occurs as a result of rotational forces or severe shaking.
Finally, penetration injuries are exactly what they sound like. This is when an object enters the skull.
Knowing the different types of traumatic brain injuries is important, as this will help you understand what’s to come if you require treatment.
There are things you can do to prevent this type of injury, but there is no guarantee that you will be successful. For example, wearing a seatbelt in a car will improve your chance of avoiding injury.
If you suffer a traumatic brain injury, regardless of the extent, it is a must that you seek medical attention from a qualified professional.
